( Dec. 9, 2021 ) Jessica Douglas has seen firsthand the benefits of full-time applied behavioral analysis for children on the autism spectrum. Her son Malcolm was able to receive it, spending nearly 40 hours a week with a therapist who tailored a curriculum of care to his needs at a critical point in his development. This level of attention and engagement with a specialized therapist allowed Malcolm to progress from only being able to speak seven words to participating in a mainstream classroom and taking part in Cub Scouts. “Our doctor at Boston Children’s Hospital told us that there is this magical time between 3 years and 6 years of age where their little brains are still like sponges and it’s when you can do the most good,” said Douglas, who works as a nurse in the Nantucket public schools. “So, we were told to really pile on the therapy from ages 3 to 6 and then we could taper off a little.” But there are simply not enough therapists on […]
