Autism, speech difficulties have not stopped Jess Stone graduating in animal studies

This week Jess Stone has finished a three-year TAFE course in animal studies and proved her doubters wrong. “When I started the Cert III, I had people tell me I can’t do it,” Ms Stone said. “But I’m like, it might take a little longer, but I can do it.” Living with Autism, a learning disability and a speech impediment, the 26-year-old was used to people underestimating her. “People think I may not be able to do things which I know I can, it just takes me a little while longer to do.,” she said. “People tend to undermine me. I like to prove people wrong, even if it takes me longer.” And on International Day of People with Disability, Jess wants more people to know that those living with a disability are often more capable than others think. “We are still human and we can pretty much do what anyone else can do,” she said. “If you give us a chance, most of us are happy to try to give things a go.” Animal studies teacher Emma Lanera said Jess did her course part-time over three years where it would usually take a year to complete. “Practically Jess […]
